Tree of Tradition

an exploration of cultural identity

✦ Project Description

This sculpture serves as a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Finnish himmeli craft. These intricate mobiles are traditionally handcrafted using field straw and twine, gracing Finnish homes with their presence throughout the holiday season. In addition to their detailed beauty, these geometric structures hold a special significance - symbolizing heavenly bodies and the structured harmony of the universe. As a Finnish-Canadian artist originally from the close-knit Finnish community in Thunder Bay, Ontario, crafting himmelis during the holiday season has been an enduring and cherished custom in our festive celebrations.

Upon relocating to Mississauga, ON, it was surprising to me that the Finnish cultural influences I had become accustomed to were not as pervasive as they were in my home town. Motivated by a desire to bridge this cultural gap, I was inspired to share my cultural heritage and traditions with the Mississauga community by introducing them to the artform of the Finnish himmeli. This installation serves as an invitation to embrace and experience this time-honored Finnish craft, fostering cultural appreciation and enrichment within the community.
