Lost Rituals
a love letter to finnish sauna culture
✦ Project Description
“Lost Rituals” was created as a confrontation of the erasure of pagan beliefs throughout history as well as a reflection on the traditional practices of our ancestors. Crafted to pay homage to the oft-forgotten customs of those who have come before us, this experience invites you to take part in the timeless ritual of the Finnish sauna.
Dating back centuries, the Finnish sauna has been a revered sanctuary for spiritual reflection and communal bonding. Historically used for several essential facets of human existence such as birthing, healing, and guiding departed souls to the underworld, the sauna often holds a reputation of having mystical qualities and has great significance in Finnish culture overall.
Saunas, traditionally taken in the nude, serve as a symbol of equality, transcending social and economic disparities. Within the sauna's intimate confines, all individuals are stripped of external markers of status, fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity. This practice not only emphasizes the value of equity, but also symbolizes a return to a natural and pure state of being.
Featuring a mural inspired by traditional Finnish folk art and carefully crafted woodwork, this installation offers viewers a glimpse into a reconceptualization of the sacred realm of the Finnish sauna. When visitors step into the space, the profound importance of ritual in shaping cultural identity is communicated while also inviting participants to immerse themselves in this honoured timeless tradition.
